High Uric Acid: Normal Range, Symptoms and an Indian Diet That Helps

"My uric acid is high" is one of the most common worries patients bring to the clinic. A high uric acid report can be harmless for years, or it can lead to painful gout attacks, kidney stones and joint damage. Here is what the number actually means and what you can do about it.

What is the normal uric acid level?

Uric acid is a waste product formed when the body breaks down purines. Most labs report a normal range of roughly 3.4–7.0 mg/dL for men and 2.4–6.0 mg/dL for women (ranges vary slightly between labs). Above about 6.8 mg/dL, uric acid can start forming crystals in the joints.

Symptoms of high uric acid

Many people have high uric acid with no symptoms at all. When it causes problems, you may notice:

  • Sudden, severe pain, redness and swelling in one joint, often the big toe, ankle or knee, usually starting at night
  • Joint so tender that even a bedsheet hurts
  • Repeated attacks that come and go
  • Hard lumps (tophi) near joints, elbows or ears in long-standing cases
  • Kidney stones or blood in urine

Indian foods to limit

  • Mutton, organ meat (kaleji, gurda) and meat-based gravies and soups
  • Some seafood, such as prawns and sardines
  • Beer and other alcohol, the biggest dietary trigger
  • Cold drinks, packaged juices and sweets made with high-fructose syrup
  • Crash diets and long fasting, which can temporarily raise uric acid

Foods that are generally fine or helpful

  • Dal, rajma and chana in normal home portions. Plant purines raise gout risk far less than meat does.
  • Low-fat milk, curd and buttermilk (chhachh)
  • Fresh fruits, vegetables, whole grains
  • Plenty of water, 2.5–3 litres a day unless your doctor has restricted fluids

Important: Diet alone lowers uric acid only modestly. If you have repeated gout attacks, tophi or kidney stones, you usually need a long-term uric-acid-lowering medicine. Do not stop it during an attack unless your doctor says so.

When should you see a rheumatologist?

See a specialist if you have had even one episode of a hot, swollen joint, if uric acid stays above 8–9 mg/dL, or if you have kidney disease, diabetes or high blood pressure along with high uric acid. Correct diagnosis matters, because infection and other arthritis can look exactly like gout.
