Many patients with joint pain get "magic" relief from powders, unlabelled tablets or injections from unqualified practitioners, or from so-called herbal medicines. Very often these contain hidden steroids and strong painkillers. The relief is real but temporary, and the damage can be permanent.
When prescribed by a specialist, steroids are life-saving in conditions like lupus and vasculitis, and useful for short periods in arthritis. The difference is correct dose, fixed duration, monitoring and gradual tapering.
Never stop steroids suddenly if you have been taking them for weeks; this can be dangerous. Bring all your medicines, including powders and herbal packets, to a rheumatologist, who can safely taper them and start proper treatment.
