- Myth: Methotrexate is chemotherapy. Fact: In arthritis it is used in a very low, once-a-week dose, many times lower than cancer doses. At this dose it works by calming the immune system.
- Myth: It damages the liver in everyone. Fact: Serious liver problems are uncommon when blood tests are done regularly and alcohol is avoided.
- Myth: It causes hair to fall out completely. Fact: Mild hair thinning can occur in some patients; folic acid reduces it.
- Myth: It works immediately. Fact: It takes 6–12 weeks to show full benefit, so do not stop early.
- Myth: Once started, you can never stop. Fact: Doses are adjusted as the disease comes under control.
Safety tips
- It is taken once a week, NOT daily. Taking it daily by mistake is dangerous. Fix one day, such as every Sunday.
- Take folic acid exactly as prescribed
- Get blood counts, liver and kidney tests done as advised
- Avoid alcohol
- Tell your doctor about fever, cough, breathlessness or mouth ulcers
- Men and women should avoid conception while on it; plan pregnancy with your doctor

- भ्रम: मेथोट्रेक्सेट कीमोथेरेपी है। सच: गठिया में यह बहुत कम डोज़ में, हफ़्ते में सिर्फ़ एक बार दी जाती है, जो कैंसर की डोज़ से कई गुना कम है। इस डोज़ में यह इम्यून सिस्टम को शांत करती है।
- भ्रम: इससे सबका लिवर ख़राब होता है। सच: नियमित ब्लड टेस्ट और शराब से परहेज़ करने पर गंभीर लिवर समस्या कम ही होती है।
- भ्रम: इससे सारे बाल झड़ जाते हैं। सच: कुछ मरीज़ों में बाल थोड़े पतले हो सकते हैं; फ़ोलिक एसिड इसे कम करता है।
- भ्रम: यह तुरंत असर करती है। सच: पूरा असर आने में 6–12 हफ़्ते लगते हैं, इसलिए जल्दी बंद न करें।
- भ्रम: एक बार शुरू की तो कभी बंद नहीं होती। सच: बीमारी काबू में आने पर डोज़ कम-ज़्यादा की जाती है।
सुरक्षा के नियम
- यह हफ़्ते में एक बार ली जाती है, रोज़ नहीं। गलती से रोज़ लेना ख़तरनाक है। एक दिन तय करें, जैसे हर रविवार।
- फ़ोलिक एसिड ठीक वैसे लें जैसे डॉक्टर ने बताया है
- बताए अनुसार ब्लड काउंट, लिवर और किडनी की जाँच कराते रहें
- शराब न पिएँ
- बुखार, खाँसी, साँस फूलना या मुँह में छाले हों तो डॉक्टर को बताएँ
- दवा के दौरान पुरुष और महिलाएँ गर्भधारण से बचें; गर्भावस्था की योजना डॉक्टर के साथ बनाएँ
